Old photographs hold enormous emotional and historical value. They tell stories of families, businesses, places, and moments that can never be repeated. Over time, however, photographs fade, discolour, tear, or suffer physical damage — and in many cases, they exist only as low-quality prints or scans.
Modern image restoration combines high-resolution scanning, advanced retouching, and AI-assisted enhancement to carefully restore these images while respecting their original character. Whether it’s a treasured family portrait, an archive image for a business, or historic material used in press or marketing, professional restoration allows these photographs to be preserved, reused, and displayed for decades to come.
We work with both private clients and businesses, restoring everything from personal family albums to commercial archives, including work created for brands such as Marks & Spencer and images used in press publications.
High-Resolution Scanning – The Foundation of Quality Restoration
Every successful restoration starts with a high-resolution scan. Low-quality scans limit what can be achieved later, so we capture as much detail as possible from the original photograph, negative, or slide.
High-resolution scanning allows us to:
- Recover fine textures and details
- Minimize noise and compression artefacts
- Create a stable digital master file for long-term archiving
- Prepare images for large prints, publications, or displays
This step is essential for both family heirlooms and commercial archives, ensuring the restored image stands up to modern quality expectations.
Image Restoration – Repairing Damage or Preserving Character
Not every photograph needs to look “new”. Restoration is always a creative and sensitive process, tailored to the client’s intention.
We can:
- Repair tears, cracks, stains, and scratches
- Remove dust, mould marks, and water damage
- Correct fading and uneven exposure
- Rebuild missing or heavily damaged areas
At the same time, some clients prefer to retain an aged or historic look, especially for heritage projects or press material. We always discuss whether the goal is a clean restoration or a respectful preservation of the original character.
Black & White, Sepia, or Colour – Creative Direction Choices
Old photographs often exist in black & white or sepia tones, but restoration gives you options.
We can:
- Restore original black & white images with improved contrast and clarity
- Recreate classic sepia tones with better balance and consistency
- Convert images into clean, neutral monochrome versions for modern use
For businesses, this is particularly useful when aligning historic imagery with brand guidelines or marketing campaigns, while families often choose styles that best reflect the emotional tone of the original photograph.
Colorization and improvemenet of Old Photographs
Adding colour to old photographs can be a powerful way to bring history closer to the present. Using a combination of AI tools and manual colour grading, we carefully colourise images based on skin tones, materials, lighting, and historical context.
Colourisation is ideal for:
- Family portraits and ancestors
- Historic business imagery
- Exhibitions and displays
- Press and editorial features
Clients can choose between subtle, natural colourisation or a more vibrant, contemporary look, depending on how the image will be used.
Improving Older Digital Photographs – Enhancing Quality from Early Cameras
Not all restoration work involves century-old prints. Many clients come to us with photographs taken in the early days of digital cameras or camera phones — images that are not historic, but suffer from low resolution, soft focus, poor lighting, noise, and limited colour depth.
The example below is from a modern iPhone taken on Hogmanay 2025, and it was edited to enhance the poor lighting and definition.
Using modern AI enhancement combined with manual retouching, we can significantly improve these images by increasing resolution, restoring detail, correcting colour and exposure, and reducing digital artefacts. This allows photographs that were once only suitable for small screens to be reused for prints, albums, and framed display, while keeping the image looking natural and true to the original moment.
This service is particularly popular for:
- Family photographs from the early digital era
- Important personal memories captured on low-quality cameras
- Images needed for reprinting, gifts, or wall display
- Updating older digital photos for modern sharing and archiving
New High-Resolution Files & Professional Prints
Once restoration is complete, we deliver a new high-resolution digital file, suitable for:
- Archiving
- Reprinting
- Publication
- Online and social media use
For clients who want a physical result, we also offer professional printing on high-quality photographic papers and fine art materials. This ensures the restored image looks just as good on the wall as it does on screen.
Framing & Mounting – Ready for Display
To complete the process, we offer framing and mounting options for images that are meant to be displayed.
This includes:
- Professional mounting for long-term protection
- Carefully selected frames to suit the image style
- Solutions suitable for homes, offices, galleries, and public spaces
For families, this turns restored photographs into lasting keepsakes. For businesses, it creates impactful visual assets for offices, exhibitions, and customer-facing spaces.
Restoration for Businesses and Families
Whether you are:
- A business preserving brand history or preparing images for press and marketing
- Or a family restoring irreplaceable personal memories
Image restoration allows the past to be protected, enhanced, and shared with future generations — without losing its authenticity.
This project involved the high-resolution scanning and restoration of an original Aberdeen City Police Force portrait board from 1889. The historic display, made up of dozens of individual portraits, showed signs of fading, damage, and loss of detail. Through careful restoration and modern upscaling, we repaired defects, improved clarity across each portrait, and created a high-quality digital master suitable for archival preservation, reproduction, and exhibition use.
A guide to cost
The cost of restoring old photographs has reduced as although it still requires Photoshop skills, AI has reduced the time required. To scan a print, re-touch, and supply an edited file and print is £25 (unless extensive editing is required). There are volume discounts and also time based charging options, and the cost per image can be as little as £5.
