Filamento lighting for the International School

Earlier this year, I was asked to quote to take photographs at the International School for a case study for new lighting installed in the gym. It was a very detailed brief and the client in the US wanted to be assured that I knew about HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, using multiple images. As I use this technique regularly for property photography, I was able to send appropriate samples.

Smart watches (Pebble and Apple)

With my renewed commitment to blogging, that will mainly be about photography, I want to add some variety to the posts and include some posts on my other interests, particularly technology.  With the launch of the new Apple Watch today (10th April) , I have ordered one and look forward to this incredible piece of technology. I already use a Pebble Steel and an iPhone 6 Plus and find this a great combination which will get better still with the new Apple Watch. I regularly walk and listen to podcasts and audiobooks and it is so useful to glance at my watch to see who is calling and decide whether to accept the call using my Bose QC20i headphones or decline the 0843 and nuisance calls with the X option on the watch. I can make calls using Siri and the in-line mic so I rarely need to take out my iPhone. In the cold winters of Aberdeen, this becomes even more useful when wearing gloves.

Other indispensable things about the Pebble / 6 Plus combo
  • Vibrate when iPhone disconnected – this has saved me forgetting or losing my iPhone several times.
  • Misfit app to track my activity (steps, calories burned etc.) although I still also use a Nike fuel band which I will stop using after I get the Apple Watch.
  • Reminders on the watch are very useful e.g. a reminder of a meeting or task to be completed
  • Text and email notifications on my wrist are a great way to stay informed when looking at my iPhone would be inappropriate but lets me selectively deal with anything urgent. I was photographing at a conference last week and got a notification (vibration) on my watch about a job request and this did merit taking out my iPhone for a quick reply which got me the job.If I had waited until the conference was finished, I would’ve lost the opportunity.
  • A 4am daily alarm on my wrist wakes me with a subtle vibration, but not my wife – easily declined if I change my mind
  • The shake to light for the time during the night is also very useful

This is only going to get better with the Apple Watch. When I ordered the first Pebble, I did think it was a gimmick and not necessary when carrying a phone but using it has proved very different. This viewpoint is from a dedicated watch lover who has top end Swiss watches which I have always had a passion for. I have recently sold some of these on eBay as apart from an occasional very dressy occasion, I already cannot imagine not having a Smart watch on my wrist.

I think a lot of people will question the point of a “connected” watch but when they see the functionality and usefulness they will quickly be converted.

As soon as I get the Apple Watch, I will create a post with my initial thoughts.

Maggies Cancer Care centre

C131030NG_170

I have been involved in photographing the Maggies Cancer Centre since the work started and have taken progress photographs at all the stages.

It was therefore very satisfying to be commisioned by Snøhetta, the Norwegian architects to take photographs of the interior which is stunning. The images have been used in a Norwegian magazine (see below). I have still more photographs to take as there were still small items to be fitted, and there was work being done in the kitchen when I was there. I am hoping to get these taken this week, and there will be another blogpost featuring more of the images.

Katie and Mark slideshow

Here is a slideshow of a selection of images from Katie and Mark's wedding created with an Autumn theme. These type of slideshows look great on iPads and other tablets and are a great way to show photographs. We are currently developing a "fusion" product that also includes some video. A blog post with 2 recent samples will be available soon.

Katie and Mark at Kinnettles Castle

W131026NG_617

On Saturday (26th Ocober, 2013) I was photographing Katie and Mark's wedding at Glamis church and Kinnettles Castle. I had not been to Kinnettles before and was delighted that it was such a great venue for photography. Although it was cold and the skies went dark a few times, we were very lucky with the weather.

Great feedback from our clients

One of the most gratifying aspects of my job as a photographer and as a manager of a small team is the great feedback we get from our clients. I am always so grateful that clients take the time to email or write to me expressing how pleased they are.

We have a large list of these testimonials in the wedding section of the website and we will be adding the same for the portrait and commercial photography.

Below are a few testimonials from client's, all received last week.

Just a quick email to say we love the photos from our shoot and the prints that we bought are lovely.
We bought the Groupon voucher as family were over from Australia and we are never all together at the same time.
Dave was great and really put everyone at ease.
Thanks again, We'll recommend you to friends in the future.

Morning Neil,
Firstly I just want to say thank you so much for photographing our wedding last weekend! You and Lucas did a fantastic job and so far I’ve had a great response from family and friends on the images! We’ve already gone through the photos and chosen favourites (found it really difficult to narrow it down…and have probably still selected too many!).
We’ve noticed that some of them you have already edited, and I’m amazed at how good a job you’d done on that too! particularly making the telegraph pole and white blocks disappear!

……
Kind Regards,
Kirsty

Kirsty and Brian at Norwood Hall

W131004NG_476

Although the forecast was for a dry afternoon, unfortunately, it was raining when we arrived at Norwood on Friday and most of the photographs before the service had to be taken inside although Brian, the best man, ushers, and both Dad's ignored the rain and got a few shots outside.

Kirsty was stunning and got photographed with her proud Dad, Alan on the beautiful staircase at Norwood Hall before the service.

Fortunately after the service, the rain had eased to a very light drizzle and we got most of the photographs taken in the beautiful grounds of Norwood Hall.

Our New Website

Although we still have a lot of work to do and it is far from complete, we are getting some great feedback on the new website. We are currently adding new galleries replacing the multimedia which will keep these as an option but all the sample galleries will emulate the front page gallery which with it's clean design and simple navigation is a very effective way to view sample images.

website-imacWhen developing the website, it was very important to us that it looked good on a desktop but also on all mobile devices. We previously experimented with having different version of the site for mobile devices but the new website scales beautifully for desktops, tablets, and smart phones, and looks great  on all devices.

When the display is too narrow for the navigation bar, it swtiches to a drop down selection to choose any of the pages. The icons that are in a line on a wider screen line up vertically on an iPhone or any narrower display.

There are some key features in the website design

  • The design is based on HTML5 and CSS3 with backwards compatibility when possible, and does not use any flash

  • Responsive design that scales to screen size and orientation

  • The website is built on "blocks" making it easy to introduce major changes easily

  • Ther are a large selection of different templates available within the website

  • It is very easy to edit existing pages or add new ones

  • There is some very impressive automation e.g. when a wedding is added, it automatically gets posted to the News section, the Browse and Buy front page, and the annual listing.

  • The contact forms are built on a "back end system" which records every enquiry in a database

  • It has automatic optimisation for SEO

There is going to be lots of content added – pages for all popular wedding venues, pages for each of our wide range of products, and commercial case studies

We are getting much more involved in website development and have several projects in progress at the moment. If you have a requirement for a new website or want to re-vamp an existng one, I would be delighted to discuss your requirements and provide a quote.
